The new PG rated movie “The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” was released on Friday,  March 6. It is a sequel to the last movie, “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.” This sequel is very happy-go-lucky, but with a little twist of romance.

Both movies take place in an old hotel run by a very optimistic man named Sonny Kapoor (Dev Patel). The first movie revolves around seven elderly Britons who decide to take a trip to Jaipur, India after seeing an ad in the paper. The seniors’ facility is  run down and old, but Sonny has  high expectations for the lot.

Each senior is there because of personal problems. The seniors consist of Muriel Donnelly (Maggie Smith), Evelyn Greenslade (Judi Dench), Douglas Ainslie (Bill Nighy), Madge Hardcastle (Celia Imrie), Norman Cousins (Ronald Pickup), Carol Parr (Diana Hardcastle), and Ty Burley (David Strathairn) and another that isn’t in the sequel is Graham Dashwood (Tom Wilkinson).

“The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” follows these seven Britons and each of their love lives. Sonny, the main character, deals with huge conflict throughout the entire movie.  The movie starts with him and Evelyn asking the owner of Evergreen Hotels for funds to expand their hotel inventory. Sonny really wants to buy more hotels and create places all around the world for senior citizens to spend their last days.

At the same time, Sonny is planning his wedding, which is not a very good idea. His fiance, Sunaina (Tena Dease), spends her time a with a good “friend,” Kushal Kadania (Shazad Latif) while Sonny works to expand his business. In one scene Sunaina and Kushal are practicing a dance for the wedding, when Sonny becomes very jealous

This all happens alongside the other romances of the elderly Britons. Throughout the movie Evelyn and Douglas flirt with each other until the end of the movie when they finally get together.

Two people arrive at the hotel in the beginning, Guy (Richard Gere) and Lavinia (Tamsin Greig). Sonny suspects that they are  inspectors for the hotel. Sonny is almost certain that Guy is the inspector because when Sonny and Evelyn had a meeting with Evergreen Hotels, the CEO hinted at the fact that the inspector would be named Guy. Since Guy is American, it is a lot more convincing due to the fact that Evergreen is based in America.

Throughout the movie, Sonny is doing his best to get a good rating from the inspector. But he is more worried about the future of the hotel than his wedding. Because of this, Sonny and Sunaina get into a big argument and this almost destroys their marriage plans.

Fortunately, Sonny pulls it together and spends more time with Sunaina before the wedding. He learns the dance they perform, and does everything she wants him to do. The movie ends happily as they celebrate their wedding and the grand opening of The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

This is a great movie, fine for a family to watch together. Though it is a sequel, this movie can stand alone and will make sense to those who did not see the first one. I definitely recommend the movie to people of any age.
